Advocacy Description: 

Burnaby Community Services provides legal information and
assistance to residents of Burnaby with low incomes, mental or
physical disabilities, and others who have difficulties accessing
legal services.

We can provide advocacy in the following areas:
• tenancy
• income entitlements, including welfare (income assistance),
PWD (disability assistance), OAS (old age security), GIS
(guaranteed income supplement), CPP (Canada pension plan), EI
(employment insurance), and criminal injury compensation
• debt and consumer rights
• elder law
• obtaining ID
• Ombuds complaints and human rights
• employment standards
• access to information and privacy
• police and security complaints
• legal aid applications
• administrative appeals and tribunals

We offer a year-round tax clinic to assist with the preparation
of income taxes. Volunteers are available by appointment during
the tax season (March to April) and for the remainder of the year
a drop-off service is provided.

We also provides public legal education and distribute the
following community resources:
• Community Resource Guide - details a wide range of community
resources in Burnaby and New Westminster
• Ready Set Learn - provides mapped listings of pre-school and
school-age programs for Burnaby families with children aged 0-12
• As We Age - lists services and programs in Burnaby and New
Westminster for seniors aged 55+
